RIFLE SIGHTING IN - RANGE 4 and 5A
The Club has the nearest sighting-in range to Palmerston North. The range is now much more pleasant to use thanks to recent developments, and future developments include improved noise-abatement measures.
It offers targets at 50m and 100m for full-bore center-fire rifles. Range 5A offers five 25m targets for rim-fire rifles up to .22 calibre, or rifles chambered for pistol ammunition up to .45 calibre.
Target faces are not yet supplied, so please bring along your preferred targets. There are a number of clips on each target in Range 5A so you can attach the target face, or alternatively use a staple-gun to tack the target onto the backing board on Range 4 or 5A.
When shooting on the ranges, please remember:
- Shoot only on the backing boards provided
- Don’t shoot the uprights supporting the backing boards; these are costly to replace.
- Remove your targets when finished and put any targets to be destroyed in the bin provided
- If you’re not taking your brass away, a container is provided to put it in. Brass only, please, steel cases go in the rubbish. DO NOT place live ammunition in the brass bin or in the rubbish bin.
- NO glass, cans or targets other than paper can be shot on the range.
- Be respectful of others who want to use the range. It’s great that you want to develop your loads, but taking up the range for half the day when others also want to check sighting is not so good.
You may bring a non-member with you to sight in their rifle as well. We do ask that non-members donate $10 to $15 for each visit as the ranges are costly to maintain and keep to a safe standard as required by the Firearms Safety Authority. In addition, if your friend wants to visit more than three times within the year, we do ask that they also join as members of the club.
Although the club no longer provides a sighting-in only membership, full membership does provide you with access to all club matches (pistol matches have additional requirements) and facilities. This includes access to matches run by:
- Archery (recurve, longbows, composite bows, crossbows)
- Service Rifle
- Smallbore Outdoor
- .22 LR Silhouette
- Air rifle
Note: For higher-calibre rifles we do ask shooters to make use of suppressors if available. Muzzle breaks are discouraged due to most of the noise generated being reflcted back over residential properties. We are in the process of improving the noise abatement on all ranges.
Special thanks to Kynoch Construction and others for supplying us with our backing Boards.
